Writing & Pedagogy Workshop Series: Stand-alone Classes, Summer IAH, and Teaching Best Practices

Faculty Guests: Dr. Stephen Deng and Dr. Joshua Lam
Graduate Guest: Justin Wigard

How do you craft a syllabus for a stand-alone class? How do you create an online summer IAH course? What are the teaching best practices for these types of classes and future classes you might teach? In this workshop, we will discuss approaches to stand-alone classes at MSU like ENG 210, ENG 280, ENG 353, ENG 140, etc., including how to create a syllabus, what readings to choose, different assignments, and how to make the class “your own.” We will also discuss the experience of being a summer IAH TA, different ways to create your own summer IAH course (particularly if you have a short timeframe to do so), and discuss the experience overall of teaching during the summer. Finally, we will hear and discuss teaching best practices from faculty and graduate student guest speakers.
