Evidence that Demands a Verdict: Prince Lourenco da Silva Mendonca and the Black Atlantic Abolitionists’ Case in Rome and the Vatican Response for Universal Justice

Africans’ involvement in the abolition of slavery is often confined to cases of ‘shipboard revolts,’ maroon communities,’ and ‘individual fugutive slaves.’ In this talk, Nafafe examines the highly-organized, international-scale legal case for liberation headed by Angolan nobleman Lourenco da Silva Mendonca and the Vatican response.

Jose Nafafe is the Senior Lecturer in Portugese and Lusophone Studies and Professor in the Department od Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Bristol.

Co-sponsored by the Department of History, African Studies, Foglio Endowed Chair of Spirituality, and the Department of Religious Studies.
