Chatterley² Intuitive Play

featuring work by Mark Chatterley and Teagan Chatterley

June 13-July 27 | Reception: June 13 from 5-7pm

SCENE Metrospace | 110 Charles St. East Lansing, MI

Intuitive Play is a sculptural series exploring intergenerational joy through the act of making and ceramic material exploration. The pieces highlight a sense of inner worlds within oneself, only to be fully discovered when free from expectation and constraints within the creative process. There is a saying: “A beginner has many possibilities, and an expert has few;” bringing play into intuitive exploration allows for work to transcend perceived limits.

Created with slabs of Chatterley stoneware clay, the sculptures within this series use ceramic techniques old and new. With different firing methods, glazes, sizes, and complexity, the pieces demonstrate a natural shift in sculpting style over time. The larger sculptures serve as a vehicle, or shrine, for the smaller pieces, which may be viewed as identities, thoughts, or emotions piloting the work. Together, the sculptures blend a lifetime of shared knowledge into a harmonious whimsy, with layered stories of experiences, growth, bonds, thoughts, feelings, and dreams.

This exhibition is sponsored by MSU Department of Art, Art History, & Design.

Teagan Chatterley is an artist and designer. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Michigan State University and a Master of Design in Designed Objects degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Inspired by quirky objects, social interactions, culture, and the natural world, Chatterley seeks to continually expand her comfort zones through an exploratory lens.
