Film in Britain offers students the opportunity to study film history and film production in two of Europe’s most vibrant cities, London and Edinburgh. This five-week program, led by Dr. Justus Nieland and Pete Johnston, will combine the academic study of film, film production, and exposure to London and Edinburgh as cinematic cities. The production component will allow students to study screenwriting, camera and sound technique, and film directing.  Filming will take place in some of the most cinematically attractive locations in both London and Edinburgh, incorporating famous landmarks like the London Eye, Brighton Beach Pier, the Hill Garden and Pergola, and more. In the studies component, students will screen films at the British Film Institute and all over London cinemas, with classroom visits from world famous filmmakers and theorists.

Following the study period in London, we will travel to Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Film Festival, which features British film and is one of the most important film festivals in the world.

Our program features talks and screenings by contemporary British filmmakers, and will encourage students to participate in the contemporary experimental film and media scene taking place at institutions like the Barbican, the Tate Modern, the National Film Theater, and the Serpentine Gallery.
