Film Screening and Discussion: A Place of Her Own and discussion with directors Dana Pney-Gil and Adi Toledano in-person, Holden Hall C-132

In a turbulent time of violence and conflict, “A Place of Their Own” offers a glimpse into the lives of women from Jisr az-Zarqa, striving to fulfill their dreams and change their reality. Through the eyes of Amina, Munira, and Rawia, and a weekly women’s circle, we learn of their struggles and aspirations. Amina dreams of a women’s donation center, Munira of an art space for youth, and Rawia of a better future for her village. As violence shakes the village and a luxury neighborhood threatens their land, their hope for change is tested.

Directors Statement: Our journey documenting the women of Jisr Al-Zarqa over the past three years has revealed why they are often described as the strongest women in the world. They bear the weight of their families, work, raise children, and shoulder responsibility for everything. What struck us most was witnessing how these women not only survived difficult life experiences but also grew from them. From an artistic perspective, the film is shot in an observational style, focusing on the women’s lives without direct interviews. The narrative flows between scenes of their daily lives and intimate group conversations, where we witness their personal transformations and solidarity. The film challenges stereotypes about the village and aims to give voice to a female perspective, highlighting the women’s ability to choose their own paths, create opportunities, and persevere despite harsh realities.

Adi Toledano: Video creator, photographer, editor, and director. Graduate of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Screen Arts Department (BA) and Tel Aviv University’s Film Department, Production track, Master’s degree (MA). Focuses on documentary filmmaking that challenges power relations and mechanisms of oppression in Israeli society. When creating, I value storytelling, diving deep, and bringing the human aspect to the screen.

Dana Pney-Gil: Creator and writer, with a background in music therapy (MA), group facilitator, social activist, and entrepreneur. I believe in the power of documentary creation to amplify the voices of the unheard. Currently, I work both as an employee and independently in the field of therapy and rehabilitation, managing rehabilitative choir for homeless women, while also engaging in writing projects and documentary creation.
