SLS Guest Speaker: Dr. Masatoshi Sato

Join the Second Language Studies Program for a talk by Dr. Masatoshi Sato, Professor at the Universidad Andrés Bello in Chile. His talk is entitled “Inclusive and Equitable Future of Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) Research.”

Abstract: ISLA research is gaining momentum. However, its scope, theoretical frameworks, and methods have largely been cognitively and quantitatively oriented. In this talk, I will first overview theories and empirical studies that are currently understood as ISLA research. Then, I will propose two future directions, by broadly defining ISLA as a discipline that investigates theoretical and practical language-related issues with the ultimate goal of improving second language education. In hope of uniting L2 professionals’ knowledge and experience, I discuss that ISLA research can be more inclusive in terms of research topics and methodologies, on the one hand. On the other hand, ISLA research can be more equitable by re-conceptualizing the research-practice relationship and incorporating practitioners’ experiences, knowledge, and voices.
