Leo Groarke: Beyond Copi: On Logic and Everyday Arguments
Copi’s famous (and in some quarters, infamous) Introduction to Logic has some significant shortcomings the founders of informal logic have decried. I see it as a positive starting point that launched a concerted attempt to understand how logic can be applied to ordinary arguments (and “critical thinking”). I will discuss how far that attempt has taken us in the last 50+ years: on a path that has greatly expanded our understanding of ordinary arguments and the ways in which logic can be used to analyze and assess them.
BIO: Leo Groarke is Professor of Philosophy at Trent University. He has recently returned to the Philosophy Department after serving as Trent’s President for ten years. He has published many articles and books on argumentation, applied ethics, visual arguments, and the history of ideas. He is the author of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy article on “informal logic.”
