McCracken Lecture: Gabrielle Suchon on ‘Persons of the Sex’ – Lisa Shapiro

The title of Gabrielle Suchon’s first work effectively summarizes her argument in that work: ‘Persons of the sex’ have been deprived of three fundamental advantages: freedom, knowledge, and authority. ‘Persons of the sex’ nonetheless have a natural capacity which enables them to partake of these advantages. The conclusion is left unstated in the title: ‘Persons of the sex’ ought not to be deprived of freedom, knowledge and authority. This seems to be a very simple argument, yet it packs in a lot. To better understand her point I focus on the odd expression ‘persons of the sex’.

Lisa Shapiro is Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at McGill University. In addition to authoring numerous articles on Descartes, Spinoza and others, she is the translator and editor of The Correspondence of Princess Elisabeth and René Descartes (Chicago 2007). She is the PI for the SSHRC funded Extending New Narratives in the History of Philosophy project.
